So, I discovered a story that I started to write like 15 years ago ('started' as in just the beginning... as in 1 page, haha). I told Jason he could read it. He decided to read it to me out loud, with character and feeling in his voice. It was very entertaining, and apparently he did a very good job.
As he read, slowly and quietly, he neared one part of the story where the main character is slowly walking through a dark forest... very scared... and suddenly... she hears... "SNAP!" (at which point Jason's quickly shouts out the word "SNAP!")
Did I jump when Jason read this?
Yes. Yes I did. I was just so into the story! I am such a great writer that I make myself jump when it's read back to me. Jason laughed so hard; he couldn't believe I jumped.
He wanted to see if it would happen again. He read the same paragraph, with even more feeling, quietly, slowly, and then... "SNAP!"
Yes, I jumped again. It's my own dang story! My own point of suspense! And I still jump when it's read to me.
We laughed even harder.
Think twice is bad? Jason swears there was a third time he read it and I still jumped!!
Jason would like to edit this post. According to him, here's what happened:
here is the how it played out
I read that one part once, you jumped, i laughed
I read the exact same part again, and you jumped, i laughed - harder
I continued to read, in the story you heard a "snap" again, and I said it with much vigor again and you jumped again!
(If Jason wrote the blog posts, they'd be a lot shorter)
